Alexandria Virginia

Alexandria, VA

Before I jump into this post I should add that we booked this trip to Alexandria, VA very sporadically! Initially, we had planned to drive down to GA to visit with family for a couple days. But as we neared the GA trip we realized it was going to be too stressful for us to make that drive for only a one full day of family time. So three days before we were due to leave we listened to our gut, stayed up late that night, and looked for other places to stay that were closer to home and suited our needs.

Ultimately, we were looking to relax as a family, be by a body of water with some history around us, eat lots of good food, and go to a zoo for Cruz. We found this stunning little spot (on Airbnb) right in Old Town Alexandria! All of our boxes were checked in this location..so we decided to book it!

Where we stayed

We stayed at The George of Old Town, located right in the heart of old town Alexandria, VA. I can honestly say, everything about our stay in this historic home was perfect. We were in the William Harrison Room for 3 nights with our soon to be 2 year old. The home and our room were clean (literally spotless), cozy, and had everything we needed.

A couple things I would like to highlight about this Home, the Kitchen was built in the 1700’s and was once owned by George Washington! The rest of the house was built around the kitchen in 1815..how cool is that!? The location of this home is absolutely perfect. We were able to walk through every nook and cranny of old town, all along the water, to stores, farmers market, restaurants..you name it!

where we ate

Night One: Momo Sushi & Cafe – This was exactly what the 3 of us needed after a day on the road. They had some amazing specials and great options for Cruz. We basically got a little bit of everything and just enjoyed ourselves for a couple hours. From our perspective, it seemed like Momo was favorite spot among the locals!

Day Two: Blackwall Hitch – Right along the port of Old Town Alexandria, VA. This place had a beautiful view. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time if you’re planning to eat at Blackwall, they fill up quickly! We started with a bottle of Rose, crab dip (so freakin’ good), and some pizza for Cruz. For our meal we had the Mahi Mahi Tacos, Mussels, and Oysters. Everything was delicious.

Day Three: We had breakfast at the local Farmers Market– We shared a juice, breakfast burrito, and fruit tart! For lunch/dinner we enjoyed tapas at BARCA, then oysters and coconut shrimp at Vola’s Dockside Grill. Both of these spots are right along the water and will not disappoint! Later in the evening we walked up to Jeni’s for ice cream.

Day Four: Rustico– This was our meal before the long drive home..so we indulged in a beer, pizza, and salad. The Margarita Pizza was our favorite!

For fun we..

Went to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo– This Zoo is FREE OF CHARGE and easy to complete with a kiddo before dinner time! The exhibits we enjoyed the most were sea lions, seals, and otters on the American Trail and the Great Cats.

Walked to the Farmers Market– This was so fun to walk to and experience. There was vibrant produce, colorful teas and juices, pastries, meat, handmade items, and more! I would say this is a must do if you’re in Alexandria on a Saturday.

“The Old Town Farmers’ Market is the oldest farmers’ market in the country held continuously at the same site. George Washington sent his produce from Mount Vernon to be sold at our Farmers’ Market.  Today, the market offers residents of and visitors to Alexandria a way to reconnect to the past while participating in an ongoing local and national tradition.  During the peak season, there are more than 70 vendors offering fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh pasta, pickled vegetables, cut flowers, potted plants, soaps, jewelry, and art.” – Old Town Farmers Market

Explored Old Town– I could not, and still can not get over the homes and history in this town. It is truly beautiful and mind blowing. James and I are dying to go back when we have child care, that way we can do a bit more in the evening hours and enjoy more adult activities. 🙂

Took a stroll through Tide Lock Park– This park had a lovely paved path along the water filled with flowers, benches, and other hidden gems! Great stroll for couples, friends, or families with kiddos.

The George of Old Town
How stunning is this room?!
Cruz was just as enthralled in the beauty and history of this place as we were.
A little slice of the courtyard garden..
George himself.
The old cooking hearth.
Modernized kitchen, once owned by George Washington!
One of our favorite parts of our room..this little balcony view was enchanting.
We all loved this bed a little too much.. lol. Seriously so cozy, we all slept in it and got great sleep each night.
Not sure if you can tell, but Cruz was really enjoying his meal at Momo!
The Smithsonian Zoo
His first time on a carousel! He chose the “monkey” and would have rode it all night if I let him.
This crab dip was the best crab dip to ever grace my mouth.
Cruz will play in any water he can find..he was in heaven!
Obsessed with this farmers market.
We can’t recommend Barca enough..
Their tapas are out of this world.

Every little home is so unique.
Not going to lie, we went to Vola’s at some point every day for their oysters and a drink.. it was so fun to try all the different ones they had and find our favorites!
The perfect stop before our long ride home..
