Due to COVID-19, many of us have been blessed with some free time.. So why not craft, reorganize, and redecorate? DIY wall art is a lovely, creative way to add character to your home!
A little background
While laying in bed with my son one day the fan was on, our windows were open, he looked like a breath of fresh air, and I thought “this feels like vacation”. I honestly felt like I was on a tropical island in our own dreamy little beach bungalow, putting my son down for his morning nap. Needless to say, I napped with him that day..I took in those moments as long as I possibly could.
After nap we went to see James and I told him about the luxurious feeling I had just had. Then I asked him to pretend, to play make-believe with me in our own home. Since we are unable to travel during this time, let us make our home feel like vacation. I’ve been reorganizing and redecorating since! It feels amazing.
Our room has been a bit bare since we moved in, so first things first, wall art..or better yet, DIY wall art! I picked the longest piece of driftwood bamboo I could find in my stick collection. If you are new to my blog, I collect a lot of natures gifts..sticks, rocks, sea shells, etc. I use all of these things in crafts to decorate my home! Using free found treasures is a great way to save money when crafting. If you don’t have time or don’t want to go stick hunting, a dowel from your local craft store will do for this particular craft!
Materials you’ll need
You will need some sort of stick or dowel, choose the length based off of the location you want your art to hang. Pick out some yarn from your craft store! I chose a few different colors and textures for the look I was going for. The options are endless..just go with whatever matches your style and speaks to you. Have fun with it! The only other thing you need is scissors. Oh, and I also used jute string to hang it, but you could use the yarn for that as well.
Cut & attach your yarn
I cut super long pieces of yarn and then trim the whole thing up after, but you can make this any length you want. Make sure you double the length you want before you cut! You’ll see why in the next step..
After you cut, bring the two ends of your yarn together. Then bring the looped end to meet your stick.
Slide the loop under the stick and pull the two ends through. Then repeat those three steps like 100 times- making whatever pattern you want, using the yarn you chose! Easy peasy. 🙂
As you progress
Your piece will start to look something like this. You can literally make any pattern you want, with any colors or textures you want! Use your unique mind..braid, knot, twist, add beads, this piece is your oyster!
You may see a spot you want to add a new color too, or more of a color you’ve already added- just slide the yarn apart and do what you’ve gotta do.
I ran into a minor set back
So about half way through mine I ran out of yarn. Lol. I had made one of these a couple months earlier for our living room and was using the same yarn. Seeing as we’re in quarantine, I was a little worried about getting more in a timely manner. Micheals craft store actually made this SO easy for me, thank God. I just ordered online and chose store pick up. They emailed me when my order was ready later that day, I drove over, called the store, and they ran my order out to my car! How amazing!? DIY wall art life savers!
This is the first one I made for my living room. I chose a shorter, chunkier bamboo stick that I found on the beach for this one! I think I’ll end up adding more yarn to this beauty in the near future..I’m not in love with how the bottom hangs.
Prepare to hang
So as I mentioned earlier, I used jute string to hang my piece. You can use whatever you want to hang it, just make sure what you use can hold the weight! I cut 6 long pieces, using 3 on each side of the stick. Attach this string the same way you attached all the yarn.
Tie the string together using a loose knot, forming a triangle. I keep mine loose and keep a decent amount of extra string hanging incase I need to make adjustments.
You did it!
Hang your work of art in it’s perfect spot and adjust it accordingly! I leave all my ends long, uneven, and wild when I hang it. I mean who knows..maybe it’s a masterpiece that way! For this particular piece, I ended up doing a blunt cut behind my bed. Unfortunately, you can’t see the bottom of mine, as I wanted it to hang behind. Choose the cut and length that best suits your space! I hope you enjoy your unique, home made wall art. 🙂
